Digital projects need to do new things. Projects that merely replicate what has been done on paper only make the paper more accessible. Information on paper is dead, but information lifted up and made explorable becomes alive. Digital tools should enable exploration by working with us instead of just providing a way to page through tables or sets of scans. Digital tools should be aware of our goals and the choices we may need to make in getting there.

This quarter, I am grateful to have the opportunity to teach the Digital Rhetoric and Communication on behalf of Stéfan Sinclair. The tag line of the course is “how to be effective communicators in a digital society and in an information age”.

The University of Georgia is proud to have been among the first institutions to offer Humanities Computing classes. The course is designed around three mini-projects: one in which students use text analysis tools, one in which students design projects to display their mastery of XHTML and CSS, and one in which they apply a basic markup scheme to sample texts and use XSLT to display the XML documents.
